This sample was created for Splitcoaststampers’ Featured Stamper challenge. Each week SCS identifies a members gallery filled with samples that showcase a variety of styles, images…..and well just pure creativity. Last Sunday’s featured stamper was Kelly aka schirmcat you have to take look at here gallery here…… this is the card decided to use as my inspiration…the guidelines for a featured stamper’s challenge are really simple.(1) Decide what card you want to CASE - that’s the most difficult because there are sooooo many talented stampers and gorgeous eyecandy - in just about each gallery on SCS (2) Change at least two things on the card, can be color combo, image, background, embellies, etc (3) Give credit back to the person you are CASEing with a link to their sample(4) show your creation…. pretty simple.  Here’s mine

shirmcat-featured-stamper.jpg

I love how it turned out - really into using soft, soothing colors right now. I kept the design and brown background. I did change from using hearts for a show of love and used the word LOVE from “For the Love of Birds” (OCL), stamped in Rich Cocoa (Memento) ink and then colored with COPICS. I had to use some of that gorgeous Flower Soft on the branches. It adds so much dimension and life to your images - with truly very little effort or $$investment. The cardstock base is Coredinations brown with pink. Main image was stamped onto “Natural” Neenah cardstock - that gorgeous pattern paper is from the “Baby and Bride” collection Graphic 45 - eyepoppin gorgeous!!!  (You’ll be seeing more samples with this paper!!!)  Another thing I changed was rather than putting a fiber/ribbon along the bottom of the main image I decided to ScorePal some lines and give a light sanding. I decided I didn’t want to put a sentiment on the bottom right corner.  That yummy satin ribbon on top of the main image was a beige color - pretty but I wanted to knock it up a notch - I gave a Spritz spray with Shimmerz Paints “Bed of Roses”. It took the color beautifully, no blotching, and really has a GORGEOUS shine. Some “Vintage Photo” Tim Holtz Distress inked sponged around really gave it the look I was going for.  There’s a little matchbox to go with the card…..Hope you will take a look at the galleries on SCS, be inspired - OH!!! tomorrow is the start of this year’s “Dare to Get Dirty” - for eyecandy, pure inspiration and stamping fun - take a look at the SCS home page - I’m sure there will be a posting right up front - if not look in the forums under challenges - come join in and starting tommorw - ENJOY and CREATE!!!  Lila

Flourishes and Shimmerz Paints SWAP

Posted in Recent projects, Shimmerz Paint at 2:55 pm

Flourishes rubber stamps and Shimmerz Paints design teams had the opportunity to SWAP stamps and paint - what a gorgeous explosion of color, design, and talent.  Here’s my project…

4-blog-flourishes-canvas-swap.jpg

I used a 8X11 oval pre-primed canvas and gave it a quick watercolor type wash using various blue re-inkers. While it was still a little damp gave a quick all over “Spritz” using “Baby’s Breath” Shimmerz Spritz.  While I let the canvas dry I started stamping my images using Flourishes “Waterlilies” , stamped onto Solar White Neenah cardstock, and embossed with black detail embossing powder. Images were watercolored using re-inkers and water.  Once the images were dry, using my paper snips I trimmed each image.  I made extra images of the large waterlilies so I could cut the center parts of the flower and pop up with dimensional tape - really gave some added dimension.  Once cut and decided on the placement used some glue to adhere in place. The sentiment from the “Waterlilies” set was stamped and embossed, then used an oval Nestabilities die cut, while the die was still in place I started sponging the colors used on the canvas base. This was layered on a slightly larger oval water color blue mat. Then went to work giving the “Waterlilies” some “Angel Wings” Shimmerz here and there.  I love how it turned out and can’t wait to place a haning mechanism on the back to display…..  Here’s a little close-up…

Shimmerz Swaps with Impression Obsessoion

Posted in Creative Cuts & More, Recent projects, Shimmerz Paint at 7:06 pm

The Shimmerz Paints team had the opportunity to pair with Impression Obsession rubber stamps.  I’d like to share a some samples using the same image but with various techniques resulting in different looks for each.  I’ll also be providing a couple tips, specifically using Shimmerz, along the way that I’ve discovered through trial and error.  Here is my first sample…

4-blog-savor-coffee-aroma.jpg

I used a hot drink wrap for the mat portion of the image. Here’s the way I did it. First, I took a Ranger Craft Mat and put my Red Brick ink pad directly onto the Craft Mat. Then give a little spritz of “Barn Door” Shimmerz Spritz, add some “Fire Engine Red” Shimmerz paint and mix (I use a kabob skewer to stir it all around. Then place your paper pieces face down and rub around. Click on thumbnails for larger images.

4-blog-wrap-1.jpg4-blog-wrap-2.jpg4-blog-wrap-2a.jpg4-blog-wrap-2b.jpg

4-blog-wrap-3.jpgTake a look and see what you’ve got - if you want more color and paint repeat the face down rubbing around motion. Set aside to dry while you stamp the IO “Coffee Aroma” image with Black Graphite Brilliance ink, heat-set, color with COPICS, die cut with rectangle Spellbinders die, airbrush with light color COPIC, mat on black, lightly paint on “Candle Light” Shimmerz on the steam. By this time your smooched wrap should be dry, put on card base, wrap with ribbon, stamp sentiment (IO) on bottom and your done.

I’ve often heard when using water based inks, paints, sprays, which includes Shimmer Spritz that the paper warps.  I have a couple of suggestions - first either real thin (like copy paper) or fine quality watercolor paper works best and reduces the likelihood of warping. For my watercolor paper I use Winsor & Newton, water colour block, 140 lbs, cold pressed with a smooth finish - especially if I plan to stamp an image onto the watercolor paper. Regardless of what paper I use for my project I always use a shallow box (I really like the ones that Costco uses for your groceries, soda/beer case boxes, or even the tops of those bankers boxes… the more shallow the better so I can move around and get the spray where I want it.  You will and should expect some overspray so protect your surface.  I do not recommend using inked newspaper - I’ve had ink transfer through to my projects.

If when I’m using either thin or cardstock, I’ve found it best to spray several light coats, letting dry between each coat, and building the color - this seems to work much better than spraying a real heavy coat that seems to cause the warping.  If you do have some curling or warping then I’ve been known to place my paper between two sheets of white copy paper and put some weights (like magazines) on in for a short time - that seems to keep it flatter.  I’ve also been known to use a small travel size iron and iron the backside……. but I really don’t even like to iron my clothes so…. this is used as a last resort…..

My next two samples were techniques I learned from PatStamps Technique Junkie newsletter.  I used watercolor paper, notice that I used some painter’s tape to hold the corners down - that seems to keep the warping to a minimum. Sprayed with “Espresso” Color Wash from Ranger, let slightly dry and then used “Mud Pie” on first sample and “Truffle” Shimmerz Spritz on the second.  Let dry completely. Then you’re going to stamp and emboss your image.

4-blog-bleach.jpg4-blog-bleach-2.jpg4-blog-bleach-3.jpg

At this point you will be painting bleach on the image. My personal preference is to use an old water brush that is dedicated for bleach…. the key here is to use fresh bleach…. so if your water brush has been sitting for a while with old bleach, dump out and replace with fresh. Paint on your bleach, let dry, then you can paint like the sample done in red or the other sample I just left with the natural color that was left. Trim, mat, and finish card as desired.

4-blog-4.jpg4-blog-5.jpgHere’s my final samples using this technique.

4-blog-red-coffee-aroma.jpg

Notice that cute little acetate pillow pouch - filled with “Buzz Beans”

4-blog-thanks-coffee-aroma-full-card.jpgBoth samples use Graphic 45 pattern paper - love it!!!!  Hope these little tips and techniques help you use your products with the best results and reduce the mistakes or possible dissatisfaction….. I think you will really like these products - I personally love them. For now, take a look at all the gorgeous samples from both the Shimmerz Paints and Impression Obsession design teams.  Enjoy and Create, Lila

Thanks a Bunch!!!

Posted in Recent projects, Shimmerz Paint at 8:15 pm

My good friend Lori Renn, who’s also a member of Shimmerz DT, just released her first stamp designs through The Rubber Cafe.  In a congratulatory tribute - take a look at the awesome sentiments she designed over at the Shimmerz Paint Blog.

Congratulations Lori on your newest adventure!!!! Hugs….. My projects are a bouquet of flowers, a tag, and coordinating card.

4-blogthanks-a-bunch-full.jpg

The Cornet Refill (paper mache) was purchased from Ellen Hutson LLC, then covered with Making Memories “Small Floral Flower Patch-Flower Patch” pattern paper. The gorgeous ribbon is from PTI and attached to the inside with Buttons and embroidery floss on the outside. The ribbon goes over and above the floral arrangement tied into a bow with the intention of hanging from a Shepard’s hook, door knob, etc. A small floral form cylinder was put in and then all those gorgeous Spring flowers arranged.

4-blog-thanks-a-bunch-tag.jpg

Here’s a close up of Lori’s “Thanks a Bunch” sentiment - available from The Rubber Cafe. Stamped with Graphite Black Brilliance Ink, die cut using Labels I from Spellbinders and a little Copic airbrushing. The edge of the tag was given a slight coat of Shimmerz Blingz “Pixie Dust”. Notice the little butterfly?? - it’s a metal charm from Making Memories Flower Patch - I painted the metal with white acrylic paint, paper pieced using coordinating Flower Patch pattern paper from behind, then used some Shimmerz Paint in Apricot and Angel Wings on the paper and a good coating of Blingz “Pixie Dust”.

4-blog-thanks-a-bunch-card.jpg

This card was sooooo fun - again it features Lori’s “Thanks a Bunch” sentiment, stamped on a pice of Making Memories “Flower Patch” special journaling book piece of paper, layered on more “Flower Patch” pattern paper, with a piece of PTI ribbon - Flower Patch also has coordinating butterflies - so I stamped on using Graphite Black Brilliance ink, colored with Copics and then Apricot and Angel Wings Shimmerz Paints.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing these awesome sentiments from Lori - I think they are just super!!!! Again CONGRATULATIONS LORI!!!! The stamps are available from The Rubber Cafe - I can’t wait to see what over creative rubber Lori has up her sleeve - knowing her it is sure to be super. Enjoy and Create, Lila
